The University of Central Florida (UCF) offers academic programming not only at its main Orlando campus but also at several instructional locations across Central Florida, which allows the university to fulfill its mission and strategic plan of expanding student access, broadening learning pathways, and extending UCF’s physical and digital footprints in support of business migration and population growth in Florida.

Instructional locations are also referred to as additional locations by UCF’s accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), or educational sites by the Florida Board of Governors (FLBOG). Below is a list of UCF’s instructional locations that are approved by HLC to offer degree programs or graduate certificates. Academic Program Quality maintains a current inventory of approved instructional locations with associated programs and programming thresholds.

If you are considering offering a course or program off the main Orlando campus that is not included in the below list of approved instructional locations, contact Hank Lewis and Lauren Maroon.

Establishing a New Instructional Location

In accordance with state and federal regulations, as well as with institutional accreditation standards, instructional locations meeting certain criteria require notification and/or approval prior to implementation of academic programming.

HLC defines an additional location as a physical facility that is geographically separate from the main campus of an institution, where instruction takes place and it is possible for students to do one or more of the following:

  • Complete 50% or more of the courses in educational programs leading to a degree, certificate or other recognized educational credential.
  • Complete 50% or more of a degree completion program (even if the degree completion program provides less than 50% of the courses leading to the degree).

Per the federal definition, an additional location must be within the same ownership structure of the institution. An additional location may be at a facility that the institution does not own, such as an office building, high school, or on the campus of another institution.

If a unit is planning to offer 50 percent or more of the total requirements for a degree program or graduate certificate at an instructional location, UCF must seek prior approval from HLC. This process includes submitting a prospectus and, in certain circumstances, hosting an on-site review team. Typically, approval takes 12-18 months to obtain, but this time period may be extended if the new location also requires approval by the Florida Board of Governors.

Additional institutional or Florida Board of Governor’s (FLBOG) approval may be required in accordance with FLBOG Regulation 8.009 (Educational Sites) and UCF Regulation 2.034 (Educational Sites).
